Performance analysis and evaluation of Inter-Satellite Optical Wireless Communication System (IsOWC) from LEO to GEO

Abstract

This paper focuses on studying the possibility of performing inter-satellite wireless optical communication (Is-OWC), specifically in LEO and GEO orbits.
The purpose of this activity is to demonstrate the capability of high-speed optical links, between LEO and GEO terminals.
This implementation will allow avoiding the use of guaranteed pole stations while achieving high system time performance, in a cost-effective approach.
However, the Is-OWC system has strict requirements on the line of sight (LOS), which is difficult to achieve using a point-to-point system.
Therefore, two proposed solutions to improve LOS retention and reduce bit error rate (BER) include:
(1) using multiple input multiple output (MIMO) technique and (2) applying using wavelength-based multiplexing (WDM).
By implementing system simulation on OptiSystem software, the results of the study proved the feasibility of proposing the above two solutions.
